概要：

ロマン主義のヒロインたちとはどのようなもので、19世紀の芸術において彼女たちはどのように表現されていたのでしょうか？この講演では、19世紀フランスにおいて、劇的な物語の登場人物として表現された数々の女性たちを見つめなおしました。

美術において、文学や舞台芸術同様、ロマン主義のヒロインたちは、激しい情熱に生き、絶望や憂鬱を抱え、愛し、そして愛ゆえに死んでいく存在として描かれていました。彼女たちは、悲劇的運命に甘んじるかのように、消え入りそうな顔色で透けるようなドレープの衣装を纏っては、儚げな様子で表現されています。そしてこのことは、当時の社会が女性たちに美徳として求めた、従順、貞淑、自己犠牲といった概念を映し出しているように思われることも指摘されました。

　女性の社会的位置付けの変遷を垣間見せる要素も含んだ興味深い講演内容で、講演会終了後も学生からの質問が途切れず、たくさんの刺激を与えてくれた有意義な講演会となりました。

Outline :

A special lecture was given by Ms. Gaëlle Rio, specially invited foreign lecturer for the 2025 academic year.

What were the heroines of Romanticism like, and how were they portrayed in 19th century art? This lecture revisited numerous women depicted as characters in dramatic narratives within 19th century France.

In the visual arts, as in literature and the performing arts, Romantic heroines were portrayed as beings who lived with intense passion, embraced despair and melancholy, loved, and ultimately died for love. They were depicted as ethereal figures, often with a faint complexion, clad in translucent draped garments, as if resigned to their tragic fate. It was also noted that this imagery seemed to reflect the concepts of obedience, chastity, and self-sacrifice that society demanded of women as virtues at the time.

　The lecture offered fascinating insights, including elements revealing shifts in women's social positioning. Questions from students continued unabated even after the lecture concluded, making it a highly stimulating and meaningful event.

 

ガエル・リオ氏略歴：

パリ市ロマン主義博物館館長　文化財総括学芸員

ルーブル学院、国立文化財研究所において、学芸員としての教育を受けた後、パリ・ソルボンンヌ大学にてPhD取得。カルナヴァレ＝パリ市歴史博物館、パリ市プティ・パレ美術館学芸員を経て、2019年から現職。19世紀フランスの美術を対象とした展覧会に意欲的に取り組み、特に2014年にプティ・パレ美術館で開催した「パリ、1900ー都市という見世物（Paris 1900. The Show City）」展では、多くの話題をさらいました。パリ市ロマン主義博物館においては、2022年の「ロマン主義のヒロインたち」展において、19世紀前半の女性表現に関する斬新な視点を提示し、注目を集めました。また、ロマン主義博物館の2026年2月のリニューアルオープン事業にも、精力的に取り組んでいます。

Ms. Gaëlle Rio’s Brief Personal History :

Director of the Musée de la vie romantique de Paris, General Curator

After training as a curator at the École du Louvre and the Institut national du patrimoine, she earned her PhD at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Following positions as curator at the Musée Carnavalet - histoire de Paris and the Petit Palais – Musée des Beaux-Arts de Paris, she assumed her current role in 2019. She has actively curated exhibitions focused on 19^th century French art, notably generating significant buzz with the 2014 exhibition “Paris 1900. The Show City” at the Petit Palais. At the Musée de la vie romantique, she presented a fresh perspective on representations of women in the first half of the 19th century for the 2022 exhibition “Romantic Heroines,” which drew considerable attention. She is also energetically working on the Musée de la vie romantique’s February 2026 reopening project.
